What was once a choice of weather or not to start moving into 4k is fast becoming a mandate if you want to keep up with the digital Jones'. While I stay on top of the latest trends and keep mental notes of emerging technology I am often third in line to buy something new.
My first dip into HD was a DSLR, Canon 7D, (and now 5dM3). I've stayed with DSLR shooting as the rush to 2K came and went. Now that 4k is here I am still hesitant to jump in because of a few simple reasons.
1. I have a wonderful DSLR rig but I have grown weary of the DSLR workflow, even with the advent of support programs like PluralEyes I am ready to have a all inclusive system again - So 4K DSLR might not be right for me.
2. I am not happy with the low-light capabilities of the current 4K, proper cameras that are out. I have shot a music video with the Blackmagic Ursa which for the most part, I really Enjoy working with but it is not great in low light. And I shot a test demo with a Pre-Release, 4k camera from Panasonic - the DVX200, but that has a fixed zoom and I much prefer to shoot with my Leica primes, and the DVX200 creates a wonderful 4K image it is also not great in low light.
3. To upgrade my editing system and dramatically increase my data storage to handle 4k will be quite expensive.
4. By the time everyone has caught up with the 4K bullet train there will be a 10k train right behind it, trying to blast it off the tracks.
5. I am still making money with HD and none of my clients are asking for 4k. This is probably the most compelling reason to not rush into 4k.
Now, having been logical and frugal in my reasoning..... I WANT 4K and I WANT IT NOW - DADDY!!!
Yes I know there is a camera called RED as well as others but i am talking about things I can afford.
From what I have seen the image quality with both the URSA and DVX200, is immaculate and quite filmic -- they are not the cameras for me for all the reasons I mentioned. But I have been spoiled with the low light capability of my 5D Mark III as well as the full frame sensor. I understand the reasons manufacturers are not putting full frame sensors in their affordable, 4k, video cameras. And the magic lantern solution bricked one of my DSLRs on a shoot so I'm not willing to go that route again.
I will continue my quest and my exercise in patience until i get that gut feeling that says - 'This is It - this is the one'. And that gut feeling will be different for each person.
